Are drugstore shampoos good? And is the affordable price enough to make you adjust to the formula?
Well I decided to answer this question by using the TRESemmé Moisture Rich Shampoo.
I got the shampoo around 4 weeks ago and have been using it regularly on my 2b wavy hair for some time now.
Here’s what I found out about the ingredients of the shampoo and what the shampoo did to my hair.

Water/Aqua/H20
Water in most hair care products (and other cosmetics) is the chief component of the formula as it’s the solvent which dissolves all the other ingredients.
The water used in hair care products is sterile and deionized. This means there are no minerals in this water as they can interfere with the other ingredients.
Water-based hair products, especially conditioners are lighter, spread easily and help hydrate your hair if there are humectants (like glycerin, etc.) present in the formula.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate
As far as surfactants go, Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) is slightly milder and less irritating than Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).
Okay so think of this way, SLS is the worst offending surfactant which can lead to redness, dryness, irritation, etc. on skin. SLES isn’t as bad but it can trigger irritation if you have sensitive scalps, Ammonium lauryl sulfate is generally safer and mild.
While most coconut-derived surfactants like cocamide MEA, etc. are known to be safe on sensitive skin as well.
However, SLES is fantastic for cleaning your scalp of debris, dirt, excess oil and product buildup, but it can strip hair dye so it shouldn’t be used on color-treated hair.
Also, a strong surfactant can clarify your scalp, clearing the way for hair fall medication like serums, etc. to reach your follicles and help them get adequate nutrition.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Cocamidopropyl Betaine or CAPB is a type of cleanser that is derived from coconut oil.
It’s often used in shampoos in place of harsh surfactants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Both of which can strip hair dye, remove moisture and irritate scalp skin.
CAPB however is milder and gentler and even has moisturizing properties.
Most sulfate-free shampoos do not lather well or clean hair very thoroughly but as the Videri shampoo contains this natural cleanser, it’s very good for removing grease and dirt from deep within your scalp without stripping it of moisture.
Biotin
Biotin is a type of vitamin also known as Vitamin B7 or Vitamin H. There has been a lot of noise in the beauty industry these past few years about this vitamin.
From vitamin gummies to supplements to hair products, biotin was everywhere. And for good reason too.
There has been considerable research to establish that biotin helps hair growth and reduction of brittleness of hair and nails.
It is in fact the building block for a lot of the hair cells and helps add thickness and strength to your individual hair strands.
In fact there was a study conducted in 2012 to show the effectiveness of biotin in promoting hair growth. Two groups of subjects were given oral biotin supplements and a placebo respectively.
The study showed that the group of women who had been taking biotin supplements showed much improvement in hair growth.
Panthenol
Panthenol is a fantastic anti-inflammatory and soothing agent.
According to a study, panthenol is also supposed to prevent transepidermal water loss. So in layman’s terms it reduces moisture loss from hair and skin cells.
Another study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information confirms that panthenol is also an anti-inflammatory agent that reduces redness and irritation on the scalp.
There is also research that suggests that panthenol can help reduce thinning of hair.
Limonene
Limonene is a compound that is found in the essential oil of the citrus peel extract. It has a variety of uses but in shampoos it is essentially added as a fragrance.
This ingredient is safe for use on skin and does not harm hair or scalp in any way. However there is some research suggesting that limonene can cause skin irritation when applied on sensitive areas for if it goes inside your eye by accident.
My Review of the TRESemmé Moisture Rich Shampoo
Okay, so full disclosure. I only got this shampoo because it was very affordable and I wanted to see if a drugstore shampoo like this would suit my hair.
I got a 900 ml bottle online just because it was available at $24.99. That is the amount I pay for my (almost) 300ml bottle of my regular salon-brand shampoo.
But let me tell you it turned out to be a bad investment as the shampoo did not live up to my expectations (which were few to begin with!)
The shampoo had a very liquidly texture and lathers very easily. So I didn’t need much product at all. However, it felt too harsh on my hair.
I could see the shampoo making my hair too dry. So I actually went from using this product 2-3 times a week to using it only once a week as a clarifying product.
Also, I couldn’t see any of the “moisture” that the shampoo promises to leave in your hair.
I guess if you had low porosity hair that needs a good cleansing this shampoo would be useful. But even then I wouldn’t recommend it for daily use.
Another thing that bothered me is the use of synthetic perfumes and colorants in this shampoo. It can really trigger scalps that are already sensitive.
The shampoo also contains a form of alcohol called isopropyl alcohol (used to add texture to the shampoo and to clean debris from the scalp). This is very strong and leaves hair and skin dry over time.
So overall, I’d give this shampoo a 3 out of 5 and that’s only because of its cleaning prowess. There are better drugstore shampoos that are sulfate-free.
Pros and Cons
What I Liked About This Shampoo
- The shampoo is good for people who have very oily hair
- It can help reduce product buildup from very low porosity hair types
- It is very affordable
- Can be used as a clarifying shampoo once in a while if you have straight hair
What I Didn’t Like
- The shampoo contains sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate so it’s very harsh on hair.
- The shampoo also contains added perfumes and colorants making it unsuitable for those with sensitive scalp
- It can strip moisture and hair dye from your tresses
- Leaves hair very dry with regular use.
Is Tresemme Moisture Rich Shampoo Good For Curly Hair
No, absolutely not. This shampoo has a lot of surfactants including the very harsh SLS and SLES. This makes this shampoo very rough on curly hair which is already prone to breakage and dryness.
Not only this, the shampoo is also very lightweight and lacks the nourishing moisturizers that are necessary to keep curly hair soft.
So this Tresemme shampoo is a terrible pick for curly hair.
My Ratings For The TRESemmé Shampoo
Design & Packaging | 3.5/5 |
Texture | 4/5 |
Ability to cleanse | 4.5/5 |
Fragrance & scent | 3/5 |
Price | 5/5 |
Hydrating Ability | 4/5 |
Gentleness | 3.5/5 |
Summary
I did not like the Tresemme Moisture Rich shampoo. I guess it would have suited a more finer, straighter hair texture than my wavy hair but it was too drying for me.
Also, it has sulfates. This is a huge red flag for me in shampoo.
Sulfate-based shampoos do not just strip moisture from your hair but they also fade hair color.
This shampoo is undoubtedly very economical. But I simply don’t think saving your money by skimping on a good hair product is good.
Also, there are other shampoos like the OGX Coconut Water Shampoo that have a similar function to this one and are sulfate-free.
