Ouai Detox Shampoo Review 2023
Let me give you a gist of how my hair was before I used this shampoo on my hair. Well, first of all, I have wavy hair that has been through colour-treatments and heat treatments over the years and has become quite dry and damaged.
In addition to this, I’m a big user of hair care products like gels, pomades, serums, moisturizers, you name it and I’d have tried it, so yes, both my hair and scalp have a lot of product buildup, along with dirt, grease and grime due to my frequent exercising.
Also, I live in a place that has hard water, so my scalp and hair also have mineral buildup!
Yes, so undoubtedly I needed a thorough hair and scalp cleaning and that’s how I got down to trying this shampoo.
I was super amazed to see how good the cleansing power of this shampoo was to have been able to get rid of my scalp buildup, dirt, grime, grease and also mineral residue which had coated my hair strands and scalp for years!
It also softened my dry hair and made my hair feel so smooth and it actually had a renewed hair shine. My wavy locs literally felt alive again and I couldn’t be happier with the results of this shampoo.
This shampoo rakes up a good lather (especially when diluted with a little water) and it makes it super easy to use and massage it into the hair and scalp.
It was super gentle on my scalp and hair and did not damage my hair at all, instead it moisturized it. Also, it didn’t damage my hair colour or even fade it at all. So that’s a plus for this product!
Coming to the fragrance of this product, it was supposed to smell like “melrose place”, which I honestly had no clue what that smell was about, but all I can tell you is that the smell was relatively mild, even though it could have been a little more subtle. But that’s totally negligible. It, either way, made my hair smell amazing once it dried.
Lastly, talking about the pricing, well, that’s the only “con” I have about this product. It is super expensive and it was way out of my budget.
But would I buy it again? Was it worth the $30 I paid? Well, I’m going to have to say yes, it was totally worth the extra bucks I paid!
I bought it off of Amazon, but only later realized that buying it from the official Ouai website would have made me pay lesser as they offer discounts. So make sure to check out the official Ouai website before buying this shampoo.
Ingredients Explained
The main ingredients of this product are mentioned below along with their benefits:
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a vitamin and nutrient-rich ingredient that has super powerful effects for the hair.
It is known to be a great scalp and hair exfoliator and is also known to be able to treat and prevent scalp conditions. (Gopal, Judy et al. “Authenticating apple cider vinegar’s home remedy claims: antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral properties and cytotoxicity aspect.” Natural product research vol. 33,6 (2019): 906-910. doi:10.1080/14786419.2017.1413567)
Since it helps exfoliate the scalp, it can indirectly promote hair growth as the hair follicles are unclogged and have space to breathe and take in the vitamins and nutrients from hair care products.
Hydrolyzed keratin
Using hydrolyzed keratin on the hair can help increase hair shine and smoothness. It can improve the condition of dry hair and reduce frizz to a considerable extent.
Hydrolyzed keratin can help rebuild the structure of the hair and reduce hair damage like breakage and split ends.
It can help increase hair elasticity and can also moisturize and coat the hair strands to prevent it from external damage.
Chelating ingredients
Chelating ingredients are similar to clarifying ingredients but are known to be much milder than clarifying ingredients.
These chelating ingredients are added into shampoos in order to help get rid of any sort of buildup on the hair like product residue, dirt, grime, mineral buildup etc.
It is also known to be able to penetrate into the hair shaft and cleanse the hair from within, without stripping away the hair’s natural moisture. And hydration.

FAQs
Is Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate a sulfate?
Well, it is quite normal for anyone to get confused with this ingredient because it sounds like it is a sulfate, but it actually is not!
This product does not contain any sulfates! This ingredient is often used in detox or clarifying shampoos because it’s a powerful cleansing agent (which actually replaces a sulfate), that is made from coconuts.
Therefore, using a product with sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate is absolutely safe.
Can I use the Ouai Detox Shampoo just as often as any other cleansing shampoo?
Since the Ouai Detox Shampoo is made on the basis of a clarifying shampoo, it is meant to deeply clarify the hair.
Therefore, it cannot be used as often as any other cleansing/regular shampoo, even though it is safer than any other clarifying shampoo.
You could use the Ouai Detox Shampoo once every week or once every two to three hair washes.
Conclusion
Overall, this shampoo is the best choice for hair that has been heavy with hair products and chemicals. It acts as a quick detox to remove all toxins and leave your hair feeling strong and healthy.
All you need to do is wash your hair with regular shampoo after applying it, but don’t forget to use conditioner as well.
