Who Are Maui?
Maui Moisture is dedicated to making hair products that are inspired by active natural ingredients such as aloe vera and pre-coconut water found on tropical islands like Maui to enhance moisture in all types of hair.
It was founded in 1987 by Todd Christopher and was specifically designed to address those with curly end needs.
Since 2016, the brand has been under Johnson & Johnson and is focused on creating products that are free of silicones, parabens, and any other harsh chemicals.
What I personally love about this brand is the company’s packaging style which embodies a very sunny Hawaiian beach life vibes seen throughout their merchandise and marketing campaigns.
A variety of products are focused on those blessed with curls, waves and coils, there is even a curl guide on their website to help you find the right product.
They have always received positive reviews from customers and are quite reasonably priced.
Who Are Shea Moisture?
The company was founded in 1991 by Liberians named Nyema Tubman and Richelieu Dennis and his mother Mary Dennis, in Harlem.
Nyema and Dennis were both a part of the Liberian Diaspora to the United States and they founded the company inspired by Dennis’s grandmother, a young mother of four and an entrepreneur named Sofi Tucker, sold shea butter, African black soap and other homemade beauty products in 1912 in a place called Sierra Leone.
What I personally love about this brand is the fact that in addition to investing in high-quality products, with each purchase you make, it goes towards supporting their mission of reinvesting back to their communities.
There are also no harsh chemicals such as parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oils, petroleum and so no. They also are against animal testing too.
Key Ingredients
The ingredients commonly found in Shea moisture products is water, coconut fruit juice is another main ingredient then added with water, shea butter, glycerin and coconut oil.
Glycerin is also seen on skin care products as it helps the hair retain moisture and prevents it from getting frizzy. The prominent natural ingredients the brand uses is coconut oil and shea butter which are actually rich in fatty acids and known for moisturizing properties.
I like how the alcohol they use is not the drying one because it is cetearyl alcohol. This has to soften properties that stabilize and keeps the ingredients bound together.
Maui Moisture also uses aloe water or leaf juice which is beneficial for moisturizing skin and hair as well as contains repairing properties to keep your hair healthy and soft.
Coconut oil and glycerin are also prominent ingredients that are used to keep the hair from losing moisture.
It also has shea butter, castor oil and papaya fruit extract that work hand in hand to control frizziness and of course, the Cetearyl alcohol binds ingredients together and adds moisture.
Line of Products
Shea Moisture offers a wide range of products such as shampoos, conditioners, hair treatments, leave-in conditioners, hair masks, stylers suitable for type 1, type 2, type 3 and type 4.
Maui Moisture also has an exclusive range of products such as shampoos, conditioners, hair masks and treatments, leave-in conditioners, hair stylers, and so on suitable for straight hair, wavy, curly hair and coils.
Pricing
Both brands are reasonably priced with prices starting from approximately 4 dollars for Maui moisture and 6 dollars for Shea moisture.
Brand Ethics
Shea Moisture partners with women-led co-ops located in Northern Ghana to empower them and source their shea butter. The brand also continues to create wonderful opportunities for women with educational programs, events and investment funds.
Maui Moisture also are committed to the integrity of their products and do not believe in animal testing and are one hundred percent cruelty-free.

Maui Shampoo vs Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Shampoo
There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to choosing the right shampoo. Personally, I can’t seem to control my unwanted frizz since it’s always a constant battle for me at all times of the year.
The Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Shampoo claims to be an ultra-nourishing formula that helps in intense hydration, thus leaving your hair softer with a healthy-looking glow. It is ideal for tight curls and safe for color-treated hair
The Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo is a deep hydrating shampoo recommended for 3A and 4 C types of hair textures and is great for damaged, dry and transitioning hair.
It is designed to seal in the moisture and replenish dehydrated strands, restore hair shine and rebuild your hair elasticity.
The Maui shampoo comes in an elegant purplish opaque bottle with a golden cap which, is leakage-proof. I loved the size which isn’t too bulky and is perfect for traveling. The texture felt light in my hand and the hair.
It has a sort of extra creaminess that’s very soft to the touch. It made my strands feel very soft while my hair was wet which I found extremely impressive and novel compared to other shampoos I tried in the past.
The Shea shampoo comes in a 13 fl oz, 384 ml bottle which looks similar to The Body Shop bottles. Even though it is not much to look at, I still love the golden color packaging and it serves the purpose well.
It is semi-transparent so I know when it’s time to purchase again. Since it is a moisturizing shampoo, it is thin, and whitish and gently cleanses my hair. But I do need more of the product than usual.
The Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Shampoo is reasonably priced as you will find it for less than seven dollars on Amazon. It is like a tropical paradise trapped in a bottle-totally yummy and heavenly.
The gentle fragrance puts tropical island vibes on the brain and I feel like booking my ticket straight to Maui with just one whiff. It’s like a fruit smoothie for your hair, which I absolutely adore.
You can purchase the Shea shampoo online for around 10 dollars. I love the fragrance – nothing very great but it is mild and quite pleasant and lingers in my hair for some time.
Overall, the Maui shampoo left my wavy hair feeling super soft. What I didn’t like much about my results was that my hair did not air dry well as it normally does.
The softness also made my hair a bit puffier than I hoped, maybe because of my medium-density strands which are not coarse as most natural hair textures.
The Shea shampoo is sulfate-free and although it won’t give you that much lather, it still does a decent job of removing all the oil, dirt and other residues.
Overall, it is a great and reasonably priced shampoo that would do well in your shower routine. The best part is that it is gentle and mild, which doesn’t dry out my hair too much and contains my frizz. Yayy.!
Is Maui Shampoo or Shea Moisture Better For 4c, Natural Hair
When it comes to the variance between Maui shampoo and Shea Moisture for 4c natural hair, it really depends on the individual’s preference and specific needs.
There is no one-size-fits-all product, as every person’s hair is unique. It’s important to consider your routine, the desired results for your hair, and your specific hair needs when deciding if Maui shampoo or Shea Moisture is the better option for you.
Maui shampoo is loved for its light and refreshing scent, as well as its ability to deliver a thorough yet gentle cleanse. It contains natural ingredients, including honey, which is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture.
Additionally, it strengthens and nourishes the hair shaft and helps to control frizz and split ends. These properties make Maui shampoo an ideal choice for people with 4c natural hair, as it helps to retain moisture, which helps prevent breakage and dryness.
On the other hand, Shea Moisture is equally praised by many with 4c natural hair. It features natural ingredients such as shea butter and Jamaican black castor oil, two of the most nourishing and powerful sealing agents you can find.
These ingredients provide the hair with increased protein, vitamins, and healthy fats, which help to deeply moisturize, condition, and protect dry and brittle 4c hair. Additionally, Shea Moisture also helps to smooth, detangle, and define curly strands.
In conclusion, it really depends on the individual’s hair type, hair goals, and styling routine as to which product is the better option for 4c natural hair. Maui shampoo is loved for its light, refreshing scent, natural ingredients, and moisturizing properties that help to prevent breakage and dryness.
Meanwhile, Shea Moisture is loved for its deep conditioning, nourishing, and strengthening effects, making it effective for controlling frizz and adding bounce to curly strands. It’s important to consider your hair needs and desired results before committing to any particular product.
Hopefully, this will help you determine which out of Maui shampoo or Shea Moisture is the better selection for your 4c natural hair.
Summary – Maui Shampoo Vs Shea Moisture
Shea butter which is one of their main ingredients will ensure that your hair remains healthy and makes it more manageable which will ultimately promote hair growth.
No, different ethnicities can use Shea Moisture but not all of them should use the same products. It has something to do with their hair texture and type which requires different care and treatment. No, the products do not because the range of products are very hydrating and safe to use.
The products are designed to gently cleanse all dirt, oil and other impurities, there are products like the Maui Moisture Hydration plus hibiscus water that infuses low porosity strands and gives it the moisture it needs without weighing hair down.
Compared to Shea Moisture, Maui Moisture products may need more help since drying may take longer and you will need assistance from hair dryers in case you need to get out of the house quickly.
On the volume factor, both of them are on the same level and still work wonders for the hair. All in all, the decision is finally yours to make because your needs might be different from mine based on texture, preferences and other factors.
I do recommend picking Shea Moisture if you wish to add more volume to your hair but if you already have thick hair, Maui Moisture may suit your hair type better.
Go ahead and give it a shot..all the best!
