Check out my review of the Maui Moisture Shea Butter Shampoo. I’ve also explained the Maui Moisture Shea Butter Shampoo Ingredients in here.
I was always quite impressed with the brand Maui Moisture because they claim to use many ingredients that are naturally derived and most often do not use any sulfated surfactants in their product formulations.
So, I decided to take a look at their official website to check up more about their products and the ‘Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Shampoo’ seemed to be one of their most liked and highly rated products by curly-haired customers, because this shampoo promises nourishment to curly locs.
It contains shea butter as its main ingredient, along with aloe vera and coconut extract, which are helpful in providing hair hydration, nourishment and repair.

It even ensures safety for daily use and usage on hair that is color-treated. So that too was a plus point for me!
Well, since it had everything that my curls needed, without any second thought, I decided to order this shampoo and try it out for myself.

Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a plant that has been used for medicinal purposes in ancient India, Greece, Rome and China since time immemorial. Usually the gel-like substance that is present in the leaves of the aloe vera plant is used for cosmetic purposes.
This substance is rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, monosaccharides, polysaccharides, omega fatty acids among other nutrients that nourish your hair.
Aloe Vera is also used in shampoos to act as a humectant and a moisturizer. This means that not only is the aloe vera plant great at adding hydration to your scalp and hair, but it is also great at moisturizing your tresses without making them greasy.
You can often find aloe vera as an ingredient in cosmetics that are prepared for oily skin and scalp types as it’s lightweight and non-comedogenic (it doesn’t clog your pores).
Water/Aqua/H20
Water in most hair care products (and other cosmetics) is the chief component of the formula as it’s the solvent which dissolves all the other ingredients.
The water used in hair care products is sterile and deionized. This means there are no minerals in this water as they can interfere with the other ingredients.
Water-based hair products, especially conditioners are lighter, spread easily and help hydrate your hair if there are humectants (like glycerin, etc.) present in the formula.
Coconut Water
Coconut water is almost like an elixir of life as it is rich in several antioxidants, cytokinins, and minerals like magnesium, calcium and potassium that are important electrolytes.
These electrolytes help increase blood circulation to hair when coconut water is used in hair care products and hence might indirectly influence new hair growth.
The anti-inflammatory properties of coconut water also makes it a good remedy for dandruff and flaking on the scalp.
As coconut water is very hydrating it is excellent for nourishing dehydrated scalps or hair strands without making hair greasy.
Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate
No, don’t get surprised. This ingredient is a “sulfonate” ; it’s not the same as sulfates.
Yes, it’s a surfactant. But it’s much milder and doesn’t remove scalp’s natural oil or hair dye pigments from hair like sulfates do.
It’s also an emulsifying agent and adds a lot of foam to the shampoo making it easier to use.
I do feel like the surfactant is much better than sulfates. However, it’s still highly cleansing and might have a drying effect on scalps that are already dry or sensitive.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is rich in nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids. It has a high content of fatty acids and emollient properties which supply adequate moisture to your hair.
These substances are easily absorbed into your hair and scalp to give you quick results. Shea butter creates a healthy moisture barrier around your hair which will lock in the moisture and protect your hair from dehydration.
This is why it is a major ingredient in a lot of products for dry hair. It also helps to make your hair more manageable and shiny.
My Review of the Maui Moisture Shea Butter Shampoo
Well, let me be straight up right here – I simply love this product and I’ve been using it for around two months now!
My hair was dull, lifeless, dry and undernourished before I started using this shampoo. It has lost all its luster over the years because of my multiple hair dyeing sessions that had severely dried it out.
So, my hair needed a great load of help and recovery and this shampoo did the most perfect job at boosting the health of my hair and bringing it back to life!
Let me get into some of the details for you guys. So to start off, it worked amazingly as a regular cleansing shampoo. It helped reduce my hair greasiness majorly and also cleansed my hair and scalp of its excessive buildup.
Also, this product promised results for hair nourishment and hair hydration and it actually delivered its promised results!
Yes, its ingredients – shea butter and coconut extract were a perfect blend that provided my hair with intense hydration while the aloe vera helped repair my damaged hair strands and bring it back to life.
This product contained absolutely no sulfated surfactants, so there were no chemicals that could dry out the hair. It also suited my color-treated hair just fine and did not damage or fade my hair color drastically.
The creamy texture of this shampoo was quite easy to apply especially when diluted with water and the after wash smell of this shampoo was super refreshing to the hair.
I paired this shampoo along with the Maui Moisture Shea Butter Shampoo conditioner and used this product on a daily basis for the first one week and then reduced it to using it every alternate day thereafter.
I paid $19.50 for the shampoo and conditioner set of 385 ml bottles which I felt was slightly highly priced and maybe buying these products separately (like just the shampoo costs $6.74) would have been a better bet. Well, lesson learnt!
But overall, a great product, highly recommended!
Pros and Cons of the Maui Moisture Shampoo
Pros:
· Made with powerful natural ingredients that nourish and repair the hair.
· Does not damage or fade colour-treated hair drastically.
· Can be used on a daily basis (but alternative day use is better recommended).
· Has a very mild and subtle fragrance that makes the hair smell refreshing once washed.
· This shampoo contains absolutely no sulfated surfactants.
· Reasonably priced if the shampoo (and conditioner) are bought separately.
Cons:
· Slightly on the expensive side if the shampoo and conditioner are bought as a set.
Maui Moisture Hair Care Tips – How To Best Use This Shampoo
Since this shampoo is a cleansing shampoo, it can be used like any other one. You will require to first wet your hair properly with water before applying the shampoo so that it lathers in well.
I personally like to dilute any cream-based shampoos with a little water in the palm of my hands before I apply it on my hair, so that it is easy to use. To be able to get a good lather, you can massage the shampoo in, in circular motions, using your fingertips.
Once you’ve lathered the shampoo in, you can leave it on for a few minutes for it to soak into your hair strands and take effect. Then, rinse off the shampoo well with lukewarm water, before conditioning your hair.
I’d suggest pairing this shampoo with its own conditioner, the Maui Moisture Shea Butter Shampoo conditioner, so that you can get the complete effects of this product.
My Feature-wise Rating of the Maui Moisture Shea Butter Shampoo
Hair cleansing ability | 4.4/5 |
Gentleness on the scalp and hair | 4.4/5 |
Effectiveness of the product | 4.6/5 |
Fragrance | 4.5/5 |
Pricing | 4.1/5 |
