Copper shades range from colors brighter than shades like auburn and ginger, sporting more of a bronze look, incorporated with tones of yellow, gold and orange.
Also, copper hair dye comes in so many different shades that you can choose the one that suits you the best too!
I have reviewed five of the best copper dyes, both permanent and semi-permanent dyes that I have tried and would recommend.

I love the Keracolor Clenditioner Hair Dye and think it is the best copper hair dye for my tresses as it is completely free of ammonia, PPD, and other harsh chemicals. You don’t even need to use a peroxide developer with it. It is also easy to use and washable. It has great color payoff despite being a temporary hair dye.

Keracolor Clenditioner Hair Dye
Dye Type: Semi-Permanent
What intrigued me about buying this product was the fact that it was a color depositing conditioner that dyed the hair.
I had never tried such a dye before and was very excited about this purchase.
Did it live up to my expectations? Yes, it sure did! I loved how it not only coloured my hair, but also cleansed and conditioned it at the same time.
What I liked about this product is that it was not only paraben and ammonia free, but also was made up of a keratin infused formula that made my hair feel renewed and vibrant after it was washed and dyed.
It had simple instructions, making it easy to use.
One thing I would like to mention is about the dyeing effect. Since my natural hair is dark brown, I had to bleach my hair to a light blonde shade before achieving the darkish copper shade that I wanted.
The dye lasted on my hair around 3 washes before it began to fade.
Pros:
- Colors, cleanses and conditions the hair all in one.
- Gentle on the hair as it contains no parabens or ammonia.
- Makes hair feel soft and vibrant after use as it contains aloe vera and argan oil
Cons:
- Works best with lighter hair shades or on bleached hair.
My Ratings:
- Dyeing effect of pigments: 4.3/5
- Ingredients: 5/5
- Staying power: 4.2/5
Wella Color Tango
Dye Type: Permanent
Since this hair dye promised a fade-resistant hair coloring, I was eager to try this one out and I must say that it did a pretty good job at coloring my hair copper.
It blended perfectly with my naturally dark brown hair color and gave my hair a vibrant dark copper shade.
The smell of this product wasn’t too strong and the consistency of the cream was perfect and didn’t drip.
I’d like to mention that for first timer users, trying out this dye will be a little tricky because it comes with no developer in the box and requires to be bought separately.
Another thing about this product is that the quantity is limited and those with longer hair will require to buy a second tube.
Also, my hair faded quicker than expected, so that’s something I didn’t like about this product.
Pros:
- Gives the hair a vibrant look as pigment is very strong
- Has a subtle smell that won’t irritate you
- The cream is a perfect non-drippy consistency that will prevent staining
Cons:
- Doesn’t come with a developer. The developer needs to be bought separately.
- Quantity is very limited and will not suffice for people with longer hair.
- Fades quicker than expected.
My Ratings:
- Dyeing effect of pigments: 4/5
- Ingredients: 3.8/5
- Staying power: 3.8/5

Vidal Sassoon Pro Series
Dye Type: Permanent
This was one of my best copper hair color buys for sure. I liked the color it dyed my hair. I definitely got the perfect shade I was looking for. Even according to the Vogue magazine, the Milla Jovovich-style copper is the “hair color of the moment.“
The dye wasn’t too harsh on my scalp and hair, as it contained no ammonia which can lead to contact dermatitis. (Draelos, Zoe Diana. “A clinical evaluation of a permanent hair dye designed to reduce allergic contact dermatitis and hair damage.” Journal of cosmetic dermatology vol. 21,9 (2022): 3925-3928. doi:10.1111/jocd.15212). Once my hair was dyed, it felt super soft and looked shiny.
This product was very easy to use as the instructions were easy to follow.
One thing I didn’t like about this product is that for the initial few hair washes, I found that the color did bleed a little.
I was a little disappointed with the color fading faster than I expected, but overall I did like the product.
Pros:
- Gentle on the scalp and hair, as it contains no ammonia.
- Makes the hair feel soft and shiny once dyed.
- Has easy-to-follow instructions.
Cons:
- Color bleeds after the first couple of washes.
- Begins to fade away within 3 to 4 weeks.
My Ratings:
- Dyeing effect of pigments: 4/5
- Ingredients: 4.5/5
- Staying power: 3.8/5
L’Oreal Paris Feria Multi-Faceted Hair Dye
Dye Type: Permanent
I was quite impressed with the number of items that came along with this hair dyeing kit – from coloring gel, to developer, shimmer serum, color booster, conditioning shampoo and power shimmer conditioner and it was reasonably priced.
Also, it was my very first try at a gel-based dye, so I liked the way it worked for me.
This product wasn’t really recommended for people with darker hair shades.
But either way I tried it out because I was looking for a dark copper shade and I did get the perfect shade that I was looking for.
I would definitely say that it is permanent and lasted till my hair began to grow out, but I did observe some amount of fading after around 5 to 6 weeks of application.
Pros:
- Contains a range of items in the hair dyeing kit which includes a coloring gel, developer, shimmer serum, color booster, conditioning shampoo and power shimmer conditioner.
- Product was reasonably priced for the amount of extras they give
- Looks vibrant for around 5 to 6 weeks before beginning to fade.
Cons:
- Not as visible on naturally darker hair shades.
My Ratings:
- Dyeing effect of pigments: 4.5/5
- Ingredients: 3.8/5
- Staying power: 4.2/5
Schwarzkopf Color Ultime Hair Color Cream
Dye Type: Permanent
This product promises a 10-week fade-resistant color vibrancy and that totally got me! I had to try out this product!
So that is exactly what I did and I really liked the results I got. It also didn’t fade very quickly like most other brands do, so that was definitely a plus.
It made my hair look vibrant and feel soft and smooth after it was dyed. The smell of the dye wasn’t too harsh while the conditioner it came with smelt really good.
For those with longer hair, I’d recommend buying two boxes as the quantity may not suffice for an entire application.
The only thing I didn’t like about this product is that it stains quite easily, so I’d recommend that you use gloves and apply some petroleum jelly on your hairline, while also being watchful of your clothing.
This product does contain a small percentage of ammonia in the form of ammonium hydroxide, but it thankfully didn’t have any harsh effect on my hair.
Pros:
- Doesn’t fade away too quickly and stays on for 6-8 weeks
- Makes the hair look vibrant and feel soft and smooth once dyed due to added conditioners
- The dye doesn’t have a strong smell.
- Comes along with a conditioner that will protect hair post-dye.
Cons:
- Dye stains skin and clothes very quickly, so precaution needs to be taken.
- Limited quantity, sufficient for only people with shorter hair length.
- Contains a small percentage of ammonia, but not very harsh on the hair.
My Ratings:
- Dyeing effect of pigments: 4/5
- Ingredients: 3.9/5
- Staying power: 4.5/5
Clairol Nice’n Easy Permanent Hair Dye
Dye Type: Permanent
I absolutely loved the shade of copper that this Clairol dye is supposed to dye your hair. It is not a deep auburn or red but more on the lighter “ginger” side.
And I’ve absolutely adored Clairol dyes for a long time now as they are permanent but do not usually contain any harsh ingredients like ammonia, etc. So it was nice to see them have the copper color hair shade that I wanted.
Yes, this dye does come with a developer but it is a milder volume 20 one that won’t hurt your hair too much.
I suggest using the developer along with dye as it helps color last longer while also making the copper shade appear brighter.
The hair dye is plentiful for the low price tag (Yayy!) and it is also covers my hair and dyes the little grey hair very well.
I also like the the conditioner that comes along with the Clairol hair dye. It helped lock in the color and makes your hair appear brighter. So you don’t need an additional hair gloss.
Pros:
- The ColorSeal conditioner given with the dye leaves hair shiny and glossy
- This Clairol dye lasts for more than 8 weeks
- Covers up grey hair very well
Cons:
- Might look brassy on certain base hair colors
- Not deep copper, gives a more ginger hue to hair
My Ratings:
- Dyeing effect of pigments: 4.5/5
- Ingredients: 4/5
- Staying power: 4.5/5
Arctic Fox Sunset Orange
Dye Type: Temporary
I recently tried the Arctic Fox Hair Dye in Sunset Orange, and I must say, the color is incredibly pigmented and provided a rich, fiery hue to my hair. I was impressed with how vibrant and eye-catching the color turned out to be.
One of the main reasons I chose Arctic Fox was its commitment to being a vegan and cruelty-free brand.
