Arctic Fox Semi-Permanent Hair Dye – Iris Green
Best Green Hair Dye For Dark Hair Without Bleach
The one thing that always scares me about using unconventional hair dyes is that I’m super paranoid about them damaging my hair.
I have dark hair, so I need to bleach it before applying such colors, and my chemically-treated hair cannot take any more of a beating.
So I was relieved to get the Arctic Fox green hair dye. I got the shade called “Iris Green” which is a more vibrant, lighter green.
There’s also “Phantom Green”, which is more of darker, forest green and “Neverland”, a lighter sage green.
Arctix Fox is a semi-permanent hair dye so you should expect it to last only a few weeks.
And this time is cut short significantly if you’re using sulfate-based shampoos, hairsprays, or other alcohol-based hair products.
So I recommend using color-safe products if you’re going to dye your hair green (or any other color for that matter).
But it’s still a good bargain as the product is free of any ammonia, peroxide, PPD, or ethyl alcohol, lead acetate or any ingredients that the United State Food and Drug Administration regards as harmful in the use of hair coloring products.
I use it on my roots too, and it hasn’t ever been a problem.
Pros:
- No ammonia, PPD, or other harsh chemicals
- Safe for damaged hair
- Looks as advertised on blonde/light hair
- Stays on for at least 2-3 weeks if taken care of well
Cons:
- Washes out easily if you’re using sulfate-based shampoos
- Doesn’t appear as vibrant on dark hair
Ratings:
- Color Payoff - 4.5/5
- Longevity - 4/5
- Safety and Hair Care - 5/5
Manic Panic Electric Lizard Hair Color
Best Temporary Green Hair Dye
When it comes to funky, bold hair colors, Manic Panic is one of the best brands out there! So I just had to try out their Lizard Hair Color.
Don’t be put off by the name, this color is a vibrant light green. And I must say it shows up well on hair!
The only catch? You’ll need to lighten your hair or have blonde hair as a base for this to look right.
The green only showed up as slight undertones on my dark hair. I had to bleach it to get the color right.
But to be fair, it looks amazing afterward.
Like the Arctic Fox Hair Color, this too is ammonia and PPD-free. What’s more Manic Panic is a vegan and cruelty free brand. So it gets brownie points from me!
Yes, it does wash off easily. So yoou’ll need to be careful not to use sulfate-based or clarifying shampoos while using this dye.
Dandruff shampoos also strip color easily. So beware of those too.
Pros:
- Vegan and cruetly-free brand
- Doesn’t contain ammonia, PPD, peroxide or harsh chemicals
- Good color payoff
- Safe on sensitive skin
Cons:
- Washes out in 2-3 weeks
- Stains hands, furniture, bathroom a lot
Ratings:
- Color Payoff - 4.5/5
- Longevity - 3.5/5
- Safety and Hair Care - 5/5
Pulp Riot Semi-Permanent Neon Hair Color
Best Neon Green Hair Dye
Okay, look. I got this Pulp Riot hair color just for the novelty factor. But honestly? I was surprised by how good this product turned out to be.
The best part about this green hair dye is that it glows under UV light. Yes, you’ve heard that right!
I loved it!
I loved the fact that it was ammonia-free and PPD-free even more.
Just a tiny little problem with this dye is that you need to bleach your hair to use it. You can bleach hair at home but you need to be careful about the color application because according to celebrity hairstylist Brad Mondo in this Youtube Video about Green hair dye:
"Bleached hair is very porous and the roots are less porous than the ends. So the bleached ends suck up more color than the roots, making the hair color really dark at the ends and lesser so at the roots"
- Brad Mondo, Celebrity Hairstylist, Youtuber
It shows up vibrant and glossy on light blonde hair, but you definitely need to lighten your hair a few degrees before it works on brunette or black hair.
This is a semi-permanent hair dye and in terms of longevity, it’s up there with the Arctic Fox dye.
In simple terms, it’ll last for at least 2-3 weeks (without fading) if you take care of your hair.
Pros:
- Glows under a black light
- No ammonia or PPD
- Semi-permanent if used with color-safe hair products
- Fades naturally so it won't cause brassy streaks
Cons:
- Color won’t last long
- Doesn’t work on dark hair
Ratings:
- Color Payoff - 4/5
- Longevity - 3/5
- Safety and Hair Care - 4.5/5
Garnier Hair Color Nutrisse Dark Matcha
Best Permanent Green Hair Dye
Most of the green hair dyes available are either semi-permanent formulas or chalks, waxes, or sprays that wash off in days.
So if you wanted to get a green dye that is more permanent (or at least, more long-lasting), you should go for the Garnier hair color.
Of course, Garnier is such a well-known brand that I had to try it out when I saw that they have a green hair shade called Dark Matcha.
This shade promises to work on dark hair but honestly, it doesn’t come out as vibrant as it would on a lighter blonde base.
But I liked the greenish-undertones it left on my black hair nevertheless.
The color does last long. I use a sulfate-free, UV-protect shampoo and my hair dye stayed on for almost 8 weeks.
Also, I liked the host of nourishing ingredients in this product. There’s fruit oil of avocado, olive, shea, grape seed oil, and more.
You get a free conditioning sachet along with the hair dye kit, and it left my hair really shiny.
Pros:
- Permanent dye that lasts long
- No ammonia
- Contains nourishing ingredients like avocado oil, grapeseed oil, and olive oil
Cons:
- Strong smell
- Doesn’t fade well
- Might not work well on black hair
Ratings:
- Color Payoff - 4/5
- Longevity - 4.5/5
- Safety and Hair Care - 4/5
Jerome Russell Temporary Hair Color Spray, Green
Best Green Hair Dye For Dark Hair
A lot of people who go for hair colors like green or blue usually want it temporarily.
So if you’re just looking for a green dye to wear to a costume party of something, you should try this Jerome Russel hair spray.
What I liked most about this hair dye is that it’s a spray-on formula. So you can get green-colored locks in just 2minutes. And it’s also very affordable.
You don’t have to worry about your hair getting damaged as there’s no ammonia or PPD here.
But is this color really worth it? Yes, if you’re going to be at a party for like 2 hours. Oh, and if you’re away from water. And if you don’t sweat a lot.
Sigh. This hair dye runs. Like a lot!
My fingers were covered in green dye every time I touched my hair. I tried blow-drying my hair after application to let the color soak in.
This seemed to work but the moment you go for a swim or out in the rain, you can find green dye running down your shoulders.
So be very very careful if you’re going to use this product.
Also, the hair dye spray smells horrible. So keep the windows open when you’re applying it.
Pros:
- No bleaching required
- It can be applied instantly
- Concentrated formula
- Free of ammonia, PPD, phthalates, etc.
Cons:
- Color washes off with even a little bit of water
- The nozzle doesn’t distribute the color mist properly

- Safety and Hair Care - 4/5

Factors to Consider When Choosing Green Hair Dye
Ingredients
When choosing a green hair dye, it's important to consider the ingredients list. Look for dyes that are made with natural ingredients such as henna, indigo, and plant extracts. Avoid dyes that contain harsh chemicals such as ammonia, parabens, and sulfates as they can damage your hair and scalp.
Longevity
The longevity of the green hair dye is another important factor to consider. Some dyes may only last a few washes, while others can last for several weeks. If you're looking for a long-lasting green hair color, choose a dye that is labeled as "permanent" or "semi-permanent".
Vibrancy
The vibrancy of the green hair dye is also important to consider. Look for dyes that offer bold and bright colors, as these will give you the most vibrant and eye-catching results. Avoid dyes that are too subtle or muted, as they may not give you the look you're going for.
Ease of Application
The ease of application is another important factor to consider when choosing a green hair dye. Look for dyes that come with clear instructions and are easy to apply at home. Avoid dyes that require complicated mixing or application processes, as these may be difficult to use and could result in uneven coloring.
Price
Price is also an important consideration when choosing a green hair dye. While some dyes may be more expensive than others, it's important to choose a dye that fits within your budget. Look for dyes that offer good value for money and don't break the bank.
Conclusion
A vibrant hair color like green is the ultimate sign of rebellion. It was a staple of the punk movement in the past decades.
But nowadays, bright pastel and jewel-toned hair colors are in vogue and not that of a rare sight.
Green hair dyes can be very cool if you wear them right. You can choose to get your whole hair dyed with a brilliant emerald or you can choose to just add some color to your tips.
Whatever style you choose, green is one hair color that is sure to get greenlit from me!
