In my article I have listed out the Black Hair Colors for European Women, that do not wash out fair skin tones and look great with all undertones.
From Keira Knightly to Mila Kunis, Emilia Clarke to Felicity Jones, the list goes on when it comes to famous European women who have been seen sporting the color black on their hair.
Well, some of the common natural hair colors of European women are blonde, brown or red, but a naturally black haired European is rare indeed.
For some reason, I always envied those who had lovely naturally black hair and thought of giving it a try, but maybe I was too scared to make the change, because it is so drastic!
Well, after a point I finally caved and dyed my hair black for the first time. I loved it and kept re dyeing it for years.
I have tried many brands of black hair dyes and finally I can tell you guys which are my top four picks!
Here is my review, check it out!

How I tested these products
I made sure to rate these hair colors on a scale of 1 – 5 based on 3 essential parameters that I chose.
My parameters:
Dyeing power:
Since they are permanent hair colors, I tested to see how effectively it dyed my hair black.
Ingredients:
I looked out whether the products contain harsh ingredients like ammonia, peroxide, bleach etc., which can damage the hair.
Fade-resistance:
This is another aspect I considered to see how long the dye lasted on my hair before it began to fade away.
Schwarzkopf Color Ultime Hair Color
So for the very first time I tried dying my hair black, my current hair color back then was ash blonde. Well, all it took me was one single application of this color to get my hair to a lovely sapphire black.
My hair is longer than my shoulders, so I had to use two boxes of this product (as recommended in the product description).
Well, I paid just $9.99 for each pack, which I felt was super worth it. The product was really easy to use and I simply loved how amazing it smelled too.
What really intrigued me about this hair color is that it had a tinge of the shade blue, which makes the hair look black, while the dark blue/sapphire color shade is so subtle. It looks absolutely royal!
In terms of its fade-resistance, well the product promised 10 weeks until it would fade, I’d say I got around 6 weeks (with root touch ups of course) until my hair began to fade, which was slightly disappointing.
Also, the color of this dye does stain your hands, t-shirt and the counter, so wear gloves and an old t-shirt for the process and keep your countertop covered with a plastic sheet.
The dye doesn’t contain any PPD or ammonia, so it is safe for the hair.
Pros:
- The dye gives your hair a rich black color with a tinge of dark sapphire blue.
- The color is very vibrant and radiant.
- It has a very nice smell.
- The product is fairly easy to use.
- The dye also doesn’t contain any PPD or ammonia, so it is safe for the hair.
- Very reasonably priced product.
Cons:
- The color lasts only around 6 weeks before it begins to fade.
- The dye stains the clothes, hands and countertop (so take the necessary precautions).
Ratings:
Dyeing power: 4.4/5
Ingredients: 4.4/5
Fade-resistance: 4.2/5
L’Oreal Paris Excellence Creme Hair Color Natural Hair
L’Oreal Paris is one of my most favorite hair dye brands. I have tried out multiple hair colors from them in the past and every single one turned out just how I had expected. So, no complaints!
Well, I had to try out the color black too. I went in for the shade natural black and dyed my naturally brownish blonde hair with it. Let’s just say – I loved it! It was recommended that the longer you keep the dye on, the darker the color gets, so I kept the dye on for around 5 to 7 minutes more than the required time.
I also shampooed my hair after I rinsed off this dye. The dye didn’t bleed too much and also the color didn’t fade.
The color began to fade after around 6 weeks, before which I did some root touch ups too.
But what I didn’t like was that the product did contain ammonia and peroxide. Well, luckily it didn’t cause any major damage to my hair.
Also, the smell of this dye was pretty strong, so I’d recommend you use it in a properly ventilated area.
Overall, a very good product and worth the $8.40 I paid for it.
Pros:
- The color is really bright and rich.
- The dye doesn’t bleed much upon shampooing the hair post-dyeing.
- It is really reasonable for the price paid.
- The color begins to gradually fade after around 6 weeks.
Cons:
- The dye smells pretty strong.
- The product does contain ammonia and peroxide.
Ratings:
Dyeing power: 4.4/5
Ingredients: 3.8/5
Fade-resistance: 4.2/5
Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Color Creme Hair Color
Well, Garnier Nutrisse is yet another brand that I can definitely say that never disappoints. I had tried this brand once before I bought this shade – blackest black (peppercorn). I have to say that this shade really gave my hair a rich black color.
I liked that this product came as a pack of two (for $15.94), which I found that it suited my medium length hair perfectly. Also, it was really reasonably priced as well.
In my opinion, I’d say this color remained vibrant on my hair for around 6 weeks after which it began to fade eventually, but gradually. Well, I pretty much expected it. But I did a root touch up once in between as well.
The product is really easy to use and it also comes with an after-dye conditioner that makes the hair feel soft and moisturized especially since the product does contain ammonium hydroxide.
The dye also contains several natural oils like avocado, argan, coconut, olive and shea oil as well. So, this is something that I liked.
Pros:
- The dye gives the hair a rich and vibrant color.
- It comes as a pack of two, suitable for longer hair lengths.
- The dye contains many natural ingredients.
- Comes with an after-dye conditioner for hair nourishment.
- Reasonably priced for a set of two products.
- The dye lasts for around 6 weeks after which it begins to fade.
Cons:
- The dye contains ammonium peroxide, but it doesn’t damage the hair extensively.
Ratings:
Dyeing power: 4.4/5
Ingredients: 4.5/5
Fade-resistance: 4.2/5
Revlon Permanent Color Silk Hair Color
This was my very first try at the brand Revlon, So, I was quite interested to see what kind of results I get! This dye too contains absolutely no ammonia, along with a rich blend of keratin and silk amino acids for hair nourishment. So, I decided to buy it.
It is supposed to have a 3D color gel technology that helps the hair have a better shine and makes the color look natural.
Well, guess what, it actually did! The color black was very rich and vibrant and lasted on my hair for around 6 weeks (with one root touch up in between) before it began to fade. Well, this is pretty much how long the hair dyes of other brands last too.
The bottle of developer comes with a nozzle, so it makes the application process really very easy too.
I also liked that this dye came along with its own post-dye conditioner, which I felt made my hair feel nice and soft and well-nourished after the dyeing process. But I did have to mix it along with my own conditioner because the quantity of conditioner isn’t sufficient for medium to longer hair lengths.
The product cost me $8.30 for a pack which was super reasonable!
Pros:
- The color is rich and vibrant.
- The color lasts for around 6 weeks on the hair and then begins to fade gradually.
- Comes with an applicator bottle (with a nozzle) for easy application.
- The dye gives the hair a lovely black sheen.
- The dye contains no ammonia and is infused with keratin and silk amino acids.
- Very reasonably priced product.
Cons:
- The conditioner is very limited in quantity, not suitable for longer hair lengths.
Ratings:
Dyeing power: 4.4/5
Ingredients: 4.4/5
Fade-resistance: 4.4/5
