Top Anti-Frizz Serums For African American Hair 2024

PURE BRAZILIAN Anti-frizz Daily Leave-in Serum

best anti frizz serum for african american hair

Talking of Pure Brazilian Anti-Frizz Daily Leave-in Serum, I initially got this gifted as a sample product, but after attempting it for the first time, I had to get its full size.

Not gonna lie, it really helps a great deal, and I am really obsessed with this serum. As I said, I have curly textured hair that is super prone to frizz, and this serum left me amazed.

It holds my hair smooth and shiny, and once applied, it works till I wash them, which is in about three to four days.

Also, after applying this serum, you can easily comb your hair with no hassle at all. Furthermore, its application won't make your scalp and shaft feel greasy. It all feels nice and clean.

It has a perfect consistency, the type I prefer, and also, you need a lot less quantity than some other serums to evenly apply on your hair, so its fuller pack feels like it will last an eternity.

Adding to that, the smell is so amazing; you are just going to love it.

But one thing that you need to keep in mind is that you need to apply the serum to your towel dry hair and not just dry hair.

Oh, and the best part? It contains UVA and UVB filters. So all the colored hair peeps will love this as it keeps hair dye from fading.

However, this serum isn’t perfect as it contains silicones. I don’t mind Amodimethicone as it doesn’t build-up as much as dimethicone. But you still need to be very careful.

Pros-

  • It gets rid of frizzy hair in just one application
  • It helps in attaining that smooth and shiny hair as it contains amodimethicone
  • Its consistency makes it easier to comb through the curls
  • It has an ideal texture, and you only need a tiny bit to apply thoroughly

Cons-

  • It has Amodimethicone which cause mild product build-up
  • Some people might be allergic to its natural ingredients like acai fruit

My Ratings-

  • Banishing the Frizz- 4/5
  • Smoothening power- 4.5/5
  • Ease of Use- 3/5

IGK Cry Baby Anti-Frizz Smoothing Serum

top anti-frizz serums for african american hair

IGK Cry Baby Anti-Frizz Smoothing Serum has its name ironically when compared to the work it really does.

It actually helped me stop crying because of my uncontrollable frizz. No, I’m being serious!

I usually use it after showering on my towel, dry or damp hair, and then blow dry it straight, but it can also be applied on dry hair as well. However, you prefer or however it feels easy to you.

Also, I like that it smells great like fresh coconuts, although it's a personal choice and a few of my friends really don't like its scent, but most of them really loved it.

However, I’ve noticed that it makes my 4c curls too soft. So if you want a Afro or a spiky hairstyle it will make your curls a bit limp. So use it judiciously.

Also, I was disappointed to see that it contains dimethicone (a form of silicone) so make sure you’re using a clarifying shampoo if you’re using this serum regularly as it can cause build-up.

Pros-

  • It tames the frizz quite easily and helps in keeping your hair free from it
  • It leaves your hair shiny on first application itself
  • Coconut oil formula moisturizes dry scalp

Cons-

  • Some might not like its scent
  • It makes the hair too soft for if you prefer a spiky hairstyle
  • Contains silicones that can weigh down your hair

My Ratings-

  • Banishing the Frizz- 4.5/5
  • Smoothening power- 5/5
  • Ease of Use- 4.5/5

Nubi Anti Frizz Hair Serum

best smoothing serum for black hair

I have tried Nubi Anti Frizz Serum, and I have to say it does work. It isn't greasy on your shafts and leaves it shiny and glossy. All you would require to do is take a small amount of it and apply it thoroughly.

I personally liked how it also protects my ends from damage thanks to its vitamin E formula. All you need to do is start applying the serum, just a tiny bit, starting from the bottoms and moving up.

The best part I feel about this product is you can apply it right after towel drying you are, and also on fully dried hair, it will work just fine.

It is also inexpensive if you buy online. So I give it bonus points for fitting into my budget.

Now coming to the bad parts. Firstly, it’s not very moisturizing and will not suit 4c hair.

It might be useful for African American hair of the 3b or 3c types but not the collier textures.

Also, the fragrance. My gosh is the added perfume strong! I don’t mind a bit of scent as it doesn’t affect my scalp but this serum has overdone the perfume.

Pros-

  • It helps in repairing your damaged hair as it contains vitamin E
  • You can apply the serum to both damp and dry hair
  • You don't need to use too much of it; a small amount works fine
  • It helps in boosting shine as it contains aloe vera

Cons-

  • Its scent is a bit strong, so people with sensitivity to scents might get issues
  • It builds upon the scalp as it contains silicones

My Ratings-

  • Banishing the Frizz- 4/5
  • Smoothening power- 4/5
  • Ease of Use- 4.5/5

Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum

anti frizz serum for straightening natural hair

So before trying out Garnier Fructis' Sleek and Shine Anti-Frizz Serum for my hair, I had invested a lot in some of the rather expensive and exquisite brands, but it turned out there's always a smarter and much cheaper choice available in the market.

Also, while I really wasn't skeptical over this particular serum, when I tried it for the first time, I thought I wasted my money as it made my hair too greasy.

But it was 10-15 minutes later when I realized that it takes that much time to absorb completely in my strands.

After that, my hair feels great, the frizz is tamed for good, and it also keeps the flyaways down. Adding to that, it keeps your curls from tangling too.

It spreads easily on your hair and doesn't make it look too oily or anything, and you can see the best of your textured hair by using this serum.

Along with that, it also protects your hair from blow dryers and ironing.

It actually makes your hair free from frizz and more manageable.

The downside? It contains silicones and benzyl alcohol. Now we all know that silicones can build-up on hair. But benzyl alcohol can leave scalp dry in the long run.

Pros-

  • It spreads easy and evenly on your strands as the consistency is thin
  • It helps in keeping your hair frizz, flyaways, and tangles as it contains argan oil
  • It doesn't make your hair greasy or look oily as it’s lightweight
  • It comes with a phenomenal scent (but it’s added perfume)

Cons-

  • Its consistency is a bit thin so you need a lot of product
  • As it is super silky, it is also stubborn when you try to wash it off
  • Contains silicones so it builds up on hair

My Ratings-

  • Banishing the Frizz- 4/5
  • Smoothening power- 4.5/5
  • Ease of Use- 3/5

John Frieda Frizz Ease Extra Strength Serum

anti frizz hair products for curly hair

I've struggled with frizzy hair for as long as I can remember, and the John Frieda Frizz Ease Extra Strength Serum has been a game-changer for me. This serum is like magic in a bottle. It's incredibly effective at taming even the most stubborn frizz and flyaways.

I apply a small amount to my damp hair before blow-drying, and the results are impressive. My hair becomes noticeably smoother, shinier, and more manageable.

Plus, it offers excellent heat protection, which is crucial for preventing damage during styling. The only minor downside is that if you use too much, it can make your hair feel a bit heavy or greasy, so a little goes a long way.

Pros:

  1. Exceptionally effective at taming frizz and flyaways.
  2. Provides smoothness and shine.
  3. Offers heat protection during styling.

Cons:

  1. Can feel heavy or greasy if overused.

My Ratings-

  • Banishing the Frizz- 4/5
  • Smoothening power- 4/5
  • Ease of Use- 4/5

Cantu Shea Butter Super Shine Hair Serum

best product for dry, frizzy hair

As someone with naturally curly hair, I've struggled to find a hair serum that hydrates without weighing my curls down. The Cantu Hair Serum has been a pleasant surprise.

This serum is enriched with argan oil, which provides much-needed moisture to my curls without making them feel greasy. It also adds a healthy shine and helps define my curls beautifully.

I apply it to damp hair and let it air dry or use a diffuser, and the results are consistently impressive. The serum also has a pleasant, subtle scent that isn't overpowering.

However, for those with straight hair or fine textures, this serum might be too heavy, so it's best suited for those with curly or coily hair.

Pros:

  1. Hydrates and defines curls.
  2. Adds a healthy shine.
  3. Pleasant scent.

Cons:

  1. May be too heavy for straight or fine hair types.

My Ratings-

  • Banishing the Frizz- 4.5/5
  • Smoothening power- 5/5
  • Ease of Use- 4/5

How To Choose The Right Anti Frizz Serum For African American Hair

Choosing the right anti-frizz serum for African American hair can make a significant difference in achieving smooth and manageable locks. Here's my little guide to help you make the right choice:

  1. Hair Type and Texture: Consider your hair type (e.g., curly, coily, or relaxed) and texture (fine, medium, or coarse). The serum you choose should be formulated to address your specific hair needs.
  2. Ingredients: Look for serums that contain ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, coconut oil, or glycerin. These moisturizing ingredients can help combat frizz and add shine without weighing your hair down.
  3. Silicone-Free Options: Some people prefer silicone-free serums to avoid product buildup. If this is a concern for you, check the product label for silicone-free formulas.
  4. Humidity Resistance: If you live in a humid climate, opt for a serum with humidity-resistant properties to keep frizz at bay even in high moisture conditions.
  5. Heat Protection: If you frequently use heat styling tools, choose a serum with heat protection properties to shield your hair from damage.

How To Apply Hair Serum For African American Hair?

Applying hair serum to African American hair can help control frizz, add shine, and improve overall manageability. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to apply hair serum effectively:

Start with Clean, Towel-Dried Hair:

  • After washing your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, gently towel-dry your hair to remove excess water. It's important to apply serum to damp hair for better absorption.

Choose the Right Serum:

  • Select a hair serum specifically formulated for African American hair, ideally one that addresses your specific hair concerns, whether it's frizz, dryness, or heat protection.

Dispense a Small Amount:

  • Hair serums are concentrated, so you only need a small amount. Start with a dime-sized amount and adjust as needed based on the length and thickness of your hair.

Rub the Serum Between Your Palms:

  • Rub your hands together to evenly distribute the serum and warm it up. This makes it easier to apply and ensures even coverage.

Apply to Your Hair:

  • Run your hands with the serum through your hair, starting from the mid-lengths to the ends. Avoid applying it directly to the roots, as this can make your hair look greasy.
  • Use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to distribute the serum evenly, ensuring that every strand is coated.

Avoid Overuse:

  • It's better to start with a small amount and add more if needed. Using too much serum can weigh down your hair and make it appear greasy.

Style as Desired:

  • You can now proceed with your preferred styling method, whether it's air-drying, blow-drying, or using heat styling tools. The serum will help protect your hair from heat damage and keep it smooth.

Finish with a Light Touch:

  • After styling, you can apply a tiny amount of serum to your hair's surface to tame any remaining frizz or flyaways. Be sparing with this final touch.
