Batiste Dry Shampoo Original Review

I have tried tons of dry shampoos in the past so by far, this has to be the best one so far.

Size & Packaging: The product comes in a size of 6.73fl oz, in a metallic and sturdy spray on can with nice shades of green and yellow, I personally love the plastic spray dispenser which is super easy and smooth to use. The cap also secures tight and prevents any unnecessary leakage.

Ingredients: To mention a few of the natural ingredients- Butane, Fragrance, Benzyl Benzoate, Isobutane, Rice starch, Limonene and Propane. The rice starch helps thicken hair fibers and removes that excess oil and dirt.

Texture: I also love the texture which is whitish and a little powdery and once you spray it turns into an extremely smooth powder that blends in well.

Gentleness on hair: I have tried many other dry shampoos and this is the only one that feels very light, clean, and refreshing after use. It does not leave buildup in my hair and absorbs the extra oil from my hair.

Fragrance: It also has a fresh and faint soapy scent which I love and find very alluring. I love how when I massage and brush the product through my hair, that fresh scent remains throughout.

Price: I purchased my shampoo from Walmart for 6.48 dollars. You can even get a combo pack from amazon.

These three gases are a type of Liquified Petroleum Gas or LPG. Yes, like the sort you cook with. If you’ve ever read the back label of any dry shampoo you’d see that it’s always labelled “Highly Flammable”. These gases are the reason why.

If you’re wondering why these are added to a dry shampoo in the first place, then let me tell you that these are what makes the dry shampoo an aerosol product. If not for these, it would just be liquid. So essentially these are propellants that launch the actual dry shampoo formula into scalp and hair.

However, these gases are also associated with a lot of health concerns especially respiratory issues. Also, they are terrible for the environment.

Oryza Sativa Starch (Rice Starch)

Rice starch is known to be very good for hair and is often used in shampoos and dry shampoos as a volumizing agent. According to some studies it contains a compound called inositol that helps promote new hair growth.

In dry shampoos, the main purpose of rice starch is to absorb excess oil and grease from the scalp, leaving hair more bouncy and fresh. This ingredient is often used in regular shampoos as well, but there it also does the job of adding to hair’s lost protein molecules, repairing damage.

Alcohol

If you see an ingredient label saying just “alcohol”, they are probably talking about denatured alcohol or ethanol which are primary alcohols. These are basically solvents that help dissolve oil from your scalp and help the ingredients reach your scalp skin faster and more easily.

Alcohols are considered problematic in shampoos as they can dry out your scalp skin and hair. but as alcohol is listed at the very end of the ingredients list it is probably present in trace amounts which is not enough to cause any harm.

There are other forms of alcohol called fatty alcohols which include cetearyl and cetyl alcohol which are actually good for your scalp and hair as they function as emollients and moisturize them.

Linalool

Linalool (2,6-dimethyl-2,7-octadien-6-ol) is often used in skincare, hair care and cosmetic products as a perfuming agent along with Limonene. It is also the chief component of some essential oils.

Along with being a perfuming agent, Linalool also has anti-inflammatory properties as concluded by this study. Linalool is generally not harmful to skin or scalp, nor is it too harsh on it. It is definitely a much milder perfuming agent than Parfum in cosmetics and haircare products.

Limonene

Limonene is a compound that is found in the essential oil of the citrus peel extract. It has a variety of uses but in shampoos it is essentially added as a fragrance.

This ingredient is safe for use on skin and does not harm hair or scalp in any way. However there is some research suggesting that limonene can cause skin irritation when applied on sensitive areas for if it goes inside your eye by accident.

Pros and Cons of the Batiste Dry Shampoo

What I liked-

  • It is lightweight and travel friendly.
  • It does not tangle hair.
  • Has a subtle citrus soapy fragrance.
  • Gets absorbed into the hair roots quickly.
  • Perfect for those like me who do not wish to damage their hair by washing it every day.
  • Adds extra volume to the hair.
  • The effect remains the entire day.
  • Makes greasy and oily hair look clean and bouncy.

What I disliked-

  • Be careful while spraying or it will leave your hair whitish, and you will have to brush out the dry shampoo, as it is very powdery.
  • If you do not massage it properly with your fingertips, the product is not that effective.
  • Keep away from sunlight, fire or heat because it is extremely flammable aerosol.
  • If you apply extra quantity, your hair will feel a lot heavier the next day.

How to Use The Batiste Dry Shampoo

Start by shaking the spray vigorously and keep the nozzle at least 30 cm from the hair. Next, massage through the hair scalp and roots using your fingertips. Brush your hair normally using a brittle brush and style it as usual.

If you are using such a shampoo for the first time, I would recommend you use only a tiny amount and keep the spray at a distance from the hair.

I got the best results when I divided my hair into tiny sections and applied the dry shampoo in parts. Remember if you do not massage it properly on your fingers, then it will look whitish and gray and getting rid of it would be such a pain.

It is a huge lifesaver for me on the days I feel too lazy to wash my hair and the best part is that it’s very easy to use and does not knot or tangle my hair.
