Alaffia Everyday Coconut Shampoo Ingredients + Review

Check out my review of the Alaffia Everyday Coconut Shampoo Ingredients and how it effects your hair. Also learn if you can use Alaffia shampoo for hair growth.

A lot of shampoos claim to be “all natural” but few actually are. But I’ve found Alaffia Everyday Coconut Shampoo stands true to their claims.

If you read the back of this shampoo label you’ll find that this product is sulfate free, paraben free, vegan, and doesn’t test on animals.

It also doesn’t contain artificial colorants, perfumes, and other problematic ingredients like mineral oil, phthalates, etc.

So it was a no-brainer that I tried this shampoo. I have very dry hair. So I thought a purely coconut oil-based shampoo would be very moisturizing.

Here, I have described the ingredients of this shampoo and my own experiences of using it. Check it out!

Ginger Extract

Ginger helps promote blood circulation. So when applied on the scalp, it can help increase hair growth in the follicles thanks to better oxygen and nutrients being delivered to the hair bulb.

It also is rich in zinc and phosphorus, some minerals that are important for hair health.

Ginger is also known to be an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent. So it’s also great for treating itching, redness and dandruff among other scalp conditions.

Decyl Glucoside

Decyl Glucoside (C16H32O6) is a surfactant that comes from natural sources such as the fatty acids from palm oil or coconut oil.

It is a very mild, gentle cleanser unlike SLS or SLES and doesn’t lead to dryness or skin irritation. This surfactant works by creating surface tension between water molecules and your skin/scalp/hair, helping remove dirt and grease more effectively.

As it is biodegradable, Decyl Glucoside is also very eco-friendly.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Cocamidopropyl Betaine or CAPB is a type of cleanser that is derived from coconut oil.

It’s often used in shampoos in place of harsh surfactants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Both of which can strip hair dye, remove moisture and irritate scalp skin.

CAPB however is milder and gentler and even has moisturizing properties.

Most sulfate-free shampoos do not lather well or clean hair very thoroughly but as the Videri shampoo contains this natural cleanser, it’s very good for removing grease and dirt from deep within your scalp without stripping it of moisture.

Panthenol

Panthenol is a fantastic anti-inflammatory and soothing agent.

According to a study, panthenol is also supposed to prevent transepidermal water loss. So in layman’s terms it reduces moisture loss from hair and skin cells.

Another study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information confirms that panthenol is also an anti-inflammatory agent that reduces redness and irritation on the scalp.

There is also research that suggests that panthenol can help reduce thinning of hair.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is rich in nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids. It has a high content of fatty acids and emollient properties which supply adequate moisture to your hair.

These substances are easily absorbed into your hair and scalp to give you quick results. Shea butter creates a healthy moisture barrier around your hair which will lock in the moisture and protect your hair from dehydration.

This is why it is a major ingredient in a lot of products for dry hair. It also helps to make your hair more manageable and shiny.

Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera)

Coconut oil is one that is rich in nutrients that can help nourish the hair from within. When coconut oil enters into the hair follicles, it can strengthen the hair follicles and prevent hair fall.

Using coconut oil infused shampoo on the hair can help make the hair feel soft and smooth, thereby acting like a hair conditioning agent and prevent the hair from becoming dry. It can help reduce hair damage like breakage, split ends and frizziness.

Our hair is made up of a protein called keratin and over time, it gets naturally depleted. Coconut oil can help reduce and prevent this loss of protein from our hair.

Coconut oil can also help reduce scalp conditions like dandruff and flaking and prevent scalp dryness and itchiness, as it has antifungal and antibacterial properties.

My Review of the Alaffia Everyday Coconut Shampoo

I got the Alaffia Everyday Coconut Shampoo as it was “all-natural”. And I was happy to note that the shampoo doesn’t contain sodium laureth sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate which are very harsh on hair.

Instead it used coco betaine (derived from coconut oil) and decyl glucoside to cleanse your hair. Now these are gentle surfactants that are derived from natural sources and do not irritate scalp skin.

When I used this shampoo I was impressed that it lathered so well despite being low on surfactant.

The texture of this shampoo is very creamy and almost lotion-like. Yet, it spread easily through my strands.

I was in for a surprise after using this shampoo. It was very clarifying and left my hair squeaky clean. This was a shock as the shampoo contains very nourishing ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter.

So I guess this isn’t really made for dry, damaged hair as it claimed. I suggest using it as a clarifying shampoo for curly/coily hair or for oily hair. If you’ve got fine, damaged strands stay away.

Also I loved the scent on this shampoo. I guess it’s from the lime extracts as this shampoo doesn’t contain any artificial perfumes or even ingredients like limonene. So that’s a bonus for me.

Coming to the price range, the Alaffia Everyday Coconut Shampoo falls somewhere between drugstore and salon brand.

I got the big bottle of this shampoo (about 900 ml) for $16.99, so I consider this a steal.

And trust me for a vegan, cruelty free shampoo full or natural ingredients this price is totally justifiable.

Should You Only Use The Alaffia Everyday Coconut Conditioner With This Shampoo?

alaffia everyday coconut conditioner

I’m a firm believer in using the conditioner and shampoo from the same line. Usually products are formulated for a specific hair issue and using two different products can dilute this effect.

Also, the Alaffia Everyday Coconut Conditioner is fantastic! I don’t see a reason why you should use a different one. In fact, I think the conditioner is better than the shampoo.

It leaves a lovely citrusy scent on your hair without the use of perfume. Also, it doesn’t contain any silicone. So you don’t have to worry about product buildup.

This conditioner is also very nourishing. It contains coconut oil and shea butter that smoothen hair, reduce tangles and breakage. There’s also cetearyl alcohol (no it’s not one of the bad ones)

Pros and Cons Of the Alaffia Shampoo

What I Liked

  • The shampoo is completely sulfate-free and doesn’t strip hair dye from colored hair
  • The formula lathers easily and cleanses hair very well despite being sulfate-free
  • It doesn’t contain parabens, phthalates and mineral oils and other problematic ingredients that have been linked to health issues like endocrine disruption, etc.
  • It has a very nice herbal scent and this is without the use of artificial perfumes
  • The shampoo is not very expensive and falls in the category of “slightly above drugstore shampoo”
  • The ingredients are all organic, vegan and some of them are from certified fair trade.

What I Disliked About The Shampoo

  • The shampoo is deceptively clarifying. It leaves hair squeaky clean despite the coconut oil formula. This might not suit people with very dry, damaged or fragile hair.

My Ratings For The Alaffia Everyday Coconut Shampoo Ingredients

Design & Packaging 3.5/5
Texture 4/5
Ability to cleanse 4.5/5
Fragrance & scent 5/5
Price 4/5
Hydrating Ability 4/5
Gentleness 4.5/5

Summary

I was a bit disappointed with this shampoo to be honest. Yes, the shampoo is sulfate-free and much gentler than any SLES and SLS-based shampoo will ever be.

But if you think that this coconut oil-based shampoo is for dry, damaged hair, you’re mistaken. It’s actually a great choice (surprisingly!) for oily hair as it’s very clarifying.

However, if you have dry hair, damaged hair, overly chemically-processed hair, I’d say stay away. It’s not worth it.

It is actually affordable considering its vegan, sulfate-free and perfume-free formula.

To sum it up, if you have an inflamed, irritated scalp and also oily hair, then this gentle shampoo will be perfect.

But I wouldn’t recommend it for either curly, coily or damaged hair textures.
