If you’re wondering how to reduce hair loss after bleaching, don’t worry, I’ve got some tips and hair treatments for you!
I often bleach my hair as it’s pitch black. And us dark-haired girls need to use bleach at least 2-3 times to get our hair light enough to take color.
So if brunettes want to go blonde or try out the more fashionable hair colors like pink or blue, we need to bleach it thoroughly first.
While this seems very simple, bleaching can have terrible consequences for your hair.

It’s basically a harsh chemical. And using bleach on your hair regularly can reduce its integrity, leading to breakage and hair fall.
Don’t worry this doesn’t mean you should give up your dreams of going blonde.
In this article, I’ve listed some tips on how to reduce hair loss after bleaching to make your tresses look and feel healthy.

We’ve asked our resident dermatologist Dr. Swati Mutha for a few tips on keeping hair healthy after bleaching and this is what she had to say.
- If you are regularly bleaching your hair, then take a good hair vitamin supplement containing all the essential amino acids, B12, Biotin, and other nutrients. It helps to keep the hair roots strong .
- Improve good fats in diet like raw olive oil , ghee, walnuts, sea food, seeds and nuts to internally prevent hair from drying.
- Condition your hair strands regularly, either with cold pressed coconut oil or a DIY mask at home with avocado, oats, egg white, etc. You can apply them for 30 mins before wash.
- Increase dietary protein to strengthen the hair strands.
- Also give break to your hair strands in between your bleaching sessions to recover from the damage.
- Go for sulfate and paraben free shampoos, and use a protective hair serum post wash to prevent further environmental damage.
How To Reduce Hair Loss After Bleaching 2022
If you’re wondering how to reduce hair loss after bleaching, it’s time to stop worrying and start following the tips below!
Use hair masks
The first step to treat your hair after a bleaching session is to use a protein hair mask.
These hair masks can be a DIY hair mask from your kitchen or you can use a branded one.
Personally, I prefer the latter when I’ve bleached my hair.
These masks contain ingredients that bring back your hair’s structural integrity and elasticity but replenishing its lost keratin.
Look for ingredients like keratin, oat and quinoa proteins, biotin, egg whites, collagen, etc.
One of my favorite hair masks to reduce hair loss after bleaching is the Elizavecca Collagen Hair Mask.
Oil and massage regularly
A good massage is really underrated. Bleaching doesn’t just cause hair loss, it can leave your hair look dehydrated and dull as well.
So an oil massage does the dual job of hydrating your tresses and increasing the blood circulation on the scalp.
The increased blood flow to your hair follicles boosts new hair shafts to grow.
Ditch the hair styling tools
Your hair is already damaged due to the bleaching process. So it would be unwise to use hair styling tools that use heat to change your hair texture.
Flat irons, curling irons, electric hot combs, all these styling tools can reach a temperature of 400F. This can be devastating to fragile hair that’s already weakened due to bleaching.
Try using no-heat hair curlers or velcro hair rollers if you want to curl your tresses.
A hair straightening serum is an option you can try to smoothen your unruly hair instead of taking a flat iron to it.
Air dry your hair
Just like hair straighteners, hair dryers also expose your tresses to high temperatures, although not as much as a flat iron.
But it’s best to still avoid this and let your hair dry naturally. If you want to quicken things up, you can use a diffuser or use a hairdryer on a cool setting.
Protect it from the sun
This is a tip that most people ignore. But if the sun can tan and age your skin, it can also do damage to your hair.
Going out in the blazing afternoon sun right after getting a bleach job is not a good idea.
It can make your tresses feel dry and dehydrated. Also, it can fade your new hair color.
So hats and caps are your friends when you’ve got your hair bleached.
Use rice water for rinsing
Ever wondered how Asian hair is so soft and beautiful? Using rice water to rinse hair is a traditional Asian beauty secret (which is not so secret anymore).
Rice water is increasingly being used in Korean and Japanese hair care products too!
When you making rice, don’t throw away the water you use to boil it. Cool it and rinse your hair with it every day to reverse caused by bleaching.
This water contains inositol, which helps hair growth.
Cut back on washing your hair
Your hair follicle is weak right after bleaching. Also, the process of bleaching leaves hair stripped of most of its natural oils.
So shampooing every day can further dehydrate hair and weaken the follicle, causing hair shedding.
Limit washing your hair to just 2-3 times a week, depending on if you have a dry scalp or really oily hair.
Also, it’s important to use sulphate-free shampoos that do not strip either hair oils or hair color.
Use cold water to wash hair
Hot water opens hair cuticles that are already exposed due to bleaching. This leaves them even more prone to damage.
So always use cold water to rinse your hair as it seals cuticles and helps add shine.
Get a trim
The most common side effect of hair bleaching is split ends. So if you feel like your hair looks really damaged, it’s best to trim a few inches off.
Hair Routine To Reduce Hair Loss After Bleaching
One of the simplest ways to reduce hair loss after bleaching is to have a proper hair care routine that will help bring back hair to its natural, healthy state.
This involves using the right shampoos, conditioners, and other hair products.
I’m about to tell you my hair care routine for my bleached blonde curly hair.
Majestic Pure Jamaican Black Castor Oil
Before I shampoo, I usually use oil to keep my hair soft and hydrated.
For this pre-shampoo oil massage ritual, I use the Majestic Pure Jamaican Black Castor Oil.
As I have curly, type 4c hair, this oil works wonder in making my curls hydrated and helps reduce frizz after washing as well.
I like this particular brand as it’s 100 percent natural and cold-pressed, and also doesn’t contain any additives like perfume.
If you have fine, thin hair or straight hair textures, castor oil might be a bit heavy for you.
So you can try Jojoba oil or coconut oil from Majestic Pure instead.
LA’DOR Damage Protector Acid Shampoo
I used the La’dor shampoo for my bleached hair as it 4.5 pH acidic formula that neutralized the pH on your after bleaching.
It’s also got argan oil that helps keep my hair moisturized.
Nature Republic Argan Essential Deep Care Conditioner
After shampooing, I use this Nature Republic conditioner.
It has got a mix of Moroccan argan oil and primrose oil, both of which are excellent for hydrating and repairing damaged hair.
I use a wide-toothed comb to distribute the conditioner through my hair before rinsing with cool water.
MATRIX Unbreak My Blonde Reviving Leave-In Treatment
After plopping my hair with a towel, I use this Matrix Leave-In Treatment to reduce hair loss after bleaching.
I chose this a the purple pigments tone my bleached blonde hair and prevents it from becoming brassy.
FAQs – Bleaching and Hair Loss
Does Bleaching Cause Permanent Hair Loss?
Not really, bleaching can cause a lot of hair loss initially, because the harsh chemical which is bleach dissolves keratin bonds on the hair cuticles.
This weakens hair structure and causes hair integrity to fail.
So this weakened hair strand now breaks off with the slightest damage. Anything from hair styling, to combing hair when it is wet can cause hair loss.
But this hair loss isn’t permanent. Only 1 in 1000 people who get their hair bleached damage the hair follicle.
If the follicle is damaged it can be difficult for new hair to grow.
But if’s just hair damage on the cortex of the strand, your tresses can recover with a little love and care.
Is it normal to lose more hair after bleaching?
Yes, it’s completely normal to lose hair after bleaching.
A healthy human (who hasn’t got any chemical treatment or bleaching done) can lose upto 100-150 hair strands
